 Follow these steps to confirm an outage and get updates:

1. Check surroundings – See if neighbours or streetlights are also affected.
   
   
2. Find your distributor – Name is listed on your Alinta bill.
   
   
3. Visit outage map – Go to your distributor’s website (e.g., Ausgrid, Powercor, SA Power Networks, Western Power) and search by address.
   
   
4. Call their hotline – Hear live outage info (e.g., Ausgrid: 13 13 88, Western Power: 13 13 51).
   
   
5. Use Alinta’s Faults & Emergencies page – Quick directory of all distributors and numbers by state.
   
   
6. Sign up for SMS updates – Many distributors send live restoration updates.
   

• Call your distributor’s faults line – Report electricity/gas outages or hazards (numbers by state on Alinta’s site).
  
  
• Use Alinta’s routing service – East Coast: 13 37 02, WA: 13 13 58 → Option 1 for Faults. You’ll be transferred to the right distributor.
  
  
• Report online – Many distributors have web forms or apps for outage logging.
  
  
• Gas leaks – Call your gas distributor’s emergency number immediately (e.g., Jemena Gas: 131 909, Australian Gas Networks: 1800 898 220).
  
  
• Stay safe – Keep at least 8–10m from fallen lines and report them as emergencies.
  

• Sep 2024 – VIC & TAS Storms – 180,000+ without power after hurricane-force winds toppled lines and towers.
  
  
• Feb 2024 – VIC Transmission Collapse – Six towers fell near Geelong, cutting power to 500,000+ homes; some waited a week.
  
  
• Jan 2024 – Cyclone Kirrily (QLD) – 64,000 customers lost power; most restored in 48 hours.
  
  
• Jun–Jul 2025 – NSW Floods – Flash flooding damaged substations; outages lasted 1–2 days.

Main causes: Severe weather, flooding, cyclones, infrastructure failures, and planned maintenance.

• Minor/local outages: 2–4 hours in most cases.
  
  
• Moderate outages: 6–24 hours depending on complexity.
  
  
• Major outages: 1–3 days; rare events can take up to a week.
  
  
• Gas outages: Hours to over a day, depending on repairs needed.
