Xbox Game Pass (including Game Pass for Console, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Ultimate) is a no-lock-in subscription, allowing Australian users to cancel at any time without penalties.

Key eligibility conditions to understand:

• Cancel anytime: There are no contracts or minimum terms for recurring Game Pass subscriptions.
• Access until period end: After cancelling, you retain access to Game Pass until the end of the current paid period.
• Recurring vs prepaid codes:
  
  • Recurring subscriptions (credit card, PayPal, Microsoft balance) must be cancelled manually.
  • Prepaid codes (e.g. 3-month cards) simply expire. There’s nothing to cancel unless recurring billing was added.
• Past-due subscriptions: If a payment fails and your account is past due, cancelling immediately prevents Microsoft from charging the outstanding balance.
• Converted subscriptions: If you converted Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate, cancelling stops renewal but does not refund unused prepaid time.
• Account-specific: The subscription is tied to the Microsoft account (gamertag) that purchased it. Cancelling on the owner account ends access for all shared users once it expires.

Microsoft provides multiple ways to cancel Xbox Game Pass.

Option 1: Cancel via Microsoft account

1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
2. Find Xbox Game Pass (or Game Pass Ultimate) in your subscriptions list.
3. Click Manage.
4. Select Cancel subscription.
5. Choose one of the options:
   
   • Turn off recurring billing (use remaining time).
   • End now and get a refund (if eligible).
6. Confirm cancellation.

Option 2: Cancel on your Xbox console

1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
2. Go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions.
3. Select Xbox Game Pass.
4. Choose Cancel subscription or Turn off recurring billing.
5. Confirm on-screen.

Option 3: Cancel via Mobile or Browser

• Open a browser on your phone or tablet and follow the same steps as Option 1.
• The Xbox Game Pass mobile app does not manage subscriptions directly.

After cancelling, your subscription should display “Expires on [date]” with no future billing scheduled.

• Effective date: Cancelling turns off auto-renew immediately.
• Access duration: You keep Game Pass access until the end of your paid period (unless refunded).
• Avoiding the next charge: Cancel before your renewal date to prevent billing.
• Missed renewal: If you’re charged accidentally, cancel immediately and request a refund.
• Refund eligibility window: Refund options may appear if you cancel shortly after renewal (not guaranteed in Australia).
• Trials & promos: $1 trials or discounted months convert automatically unless recurring billing is turned off.

You don’t need to wait until the last day. You can cancel weeks in advance and still keep access until expiry.

• No cancellation fees: Microsoft does not charge termination or exit fees.
• No admin fees: Cancelling is free.
• Prepaid time: Unused time is not refunded by default.
• Refund trade-off: If you choose an immediate refund, Game Pass access ends instantly.
• No reactivation fees: You can resubscribe anytime without penalty.

The only money involved is the subscription time you’ve already paid for.
