You can cancel a World Gym membership at any time, but the cost and process depend on when you cancel and what type of contract you’re on.

Cooling-off period (change of mind)

• All World Gym Australia memberships include a cooling-off period.
• Most states: 7 days from joining
• Queensland: 48 hours (state-specific rule)
• If you cancel within this window, you can exit the contract with only a reasonable admin fee (often around $50, set by the club). You won’t be locked into the full term.

Cancelling after the cooling-off period (within a minimum term)

• If you’re on a fixed-term contract (commonly 12 or 18 months) and cancel early, an early termination fee usually applies.
• Standard World Gym terms set this fee at 50% of the remaining membership fees.
• If 30 days or fewer remain on your contract, the 50% fee generally does not apply - you instead serve the final notice period.

Cancelling after the minimum term (or no lock-in memberships)

• Once your minimum term ends, memberships typically roll into month-to-month.
• You can cancel at any time with 30 days’ written notice, with no cancellation penalty beyond paying for that final notice period.

Special circumstances that may waive fees

• Medical incapacity: With medical certification, fees are often waived.
• Bankruptcy: Cancellation is generally allowed with documentation.
• Relocation or hardship: Often assessed case-by-case by the club and may reduce or remove fees.

Notice requirements

• Cancellation must be in writing (signed form, letter, or accepted email).
• Some clubs prefer in-person forms, but written notice is generally valid under fitness industry rules.

Step 1: Check your contract status

Confirm whether you are:

• still within the cooling-off period,
• mid-contract, or
• past your minimum term.

This determines whether fees apply.

Step 2: Prepare your written cancellation request

Include:

• Full name
• Membership number (if available)
• Home club location
• Clear statement requesting cancellation
• Requested effective date (e.g. “after the 30-day notice period”)

Step 3: Submit your cancellation

You can usually cancel by:

• In person: Complete and sign the cancellation form at reception.
• Email: Send your request to your club’s official email (recommended for a paper trail).
• Mail: Send a signed letter to the gym if you can’t attend in person.

Step 4: Serve the notice period

• The standard notice period is 30 days (unless cancelling within cooling-off).
• Regular billing continues during this period.

Step 5: Get confirmation

• Ask for written confirmation stating your final date and final payment.
• Keep a copy of all emails or forms.

Step 6: Return access items

• Return your access card or fob to avoid replacement fees.

Within cooling-off

• Only a small admin fee applies.

Mid-contract cancellation

• Early termination fee is typically 50% of remaining membership fees.
• Some clubs cap this fee - check your agreement.

After minimum term

• No cancellation fee.
• You simply pay through the 30-day notice period.

Other possible charges

• Lost access card/fob replacement
• Failed payment fees if a debit bounces
• Outstanding arrears that must be settled before cancellation is finalised
