What does
MG Motor Australia
's warranty cover?

MG warranty Australia cover comes in two tiers, and where you service the car decides which one you keep. Tier one is a standard factory warranty that applies no matter who services the vehicle. Tier two is an extended top-up you only hold by servicing exclusively at an authorised MG dealer.

The MG 10 year warranty headline is real — but the MG 250,000 km warranty tier is conditional, not automatic. Read the full MG Motor Australia warranty terms and conditions and the 10-year / 250,000 km warranty overview before you assume which tier applies to your VIN.

Warranty periods by vehicle and use

  • Passenger vehicles, private use: 7 years / unlimited km standard, rising to 10 years / 250,000 km (whichever comes first) when dealer-serviced.
  • Passenger vehicles, commercial use: 7 years / 160,000 km for rideshare, taxi, courier and fleet vehicles. The extended tier is not available.
  • Light commercial (e.g. MG U9 ute), private use: 5 years / unlimited km standard, rising to 7 years / 200,000 km when dealer-serviced.
  • Light commercial, commercial use: 5 years / 160,000 km, with no extended tier.

Components with shorter cover

  • High-voltage traction battery: MG EV battery warranty cover runs 7 years / 150,000 km on electric and hybrid models.
  • Paint and anti-perforation (rust-through): 7 years on passenger vehicles, 5 years on commercial vehicles.
  • 12-volt battery: 24 months / unlimited km. Air suspension and four-wheel steering: 5 years / unlimited km.
  • Soft top on the MG Cyberster: 5 years / unlimited km.
  • Brake pads, discs and spark plugs: 6 months / 10,000 km. Wiper blades, globes and filters: 3 months / 5,000–10,000 km.
  • MG Genuine Parts bought over the counter: 12 months.

What travels with the warranty

  • Roadside assistance: MG Roadside Assist warranty cover runs for the full duration of your vehicle's warranty — 24/7 flat tyres, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, minor repairs, and free towing up to 100 km regionally or 20 km metro. See MG Roadside Assist or call 1800 64 2277 (1800 MG CARS).
  • Transferability: Cover runs from the date of first registration and continues irrespective of change of ownership, provided the service history is complete and documented.
  • Capped-price servicing: Precise Price Servicing covers the first 7 years / 7 scheduled services, with your quote fixed for 12 months when booked at an authorised MG dealer.

The servicing condition that decides your tier

  • To hold the extended tier: service exclusively at an authorised MG Motor dealer, with every service completed within 30 days and 2,000 km of the scheduled interval. Miss one and the vehicle drops permanently to the 7-year standard warranty — a change reported in detail by Drive.
  • To hold the standard tier: you may use any suitably qualified Australian repairer, but the same 30-day / 2,000 km window applies and the record must be lodged through the MG customer service history upload portal within 10 days.
  • Typical intervals: 12 months / 10,000–15,000 km for petrol and hybrid models, and around 24 months / 40,000 km for electric models. Confirm yours in the Owner's Manual.

Which program applies to your car

  • The FY26 Warranty Program commenced 1 July 2025 and is the most recent program we could verify. An earlier 10-year offer applied to vehicles first registered 1 August 2024 – 30 June 2025.
  • We could not verify whether a program from 1 July 2026 changed these terms. Treat the schedule printed in your own Service & Warranty Booklet as the governing document for your VIN.
  • IM Motor branded vehicles, sold alongside MG, carry a separate warranty — the MG terms do not apply.

How to claim a warranty with
MG Motor Australia

Every MG warranty claim goes through an authorised MG dealer, not head office. There is no online claim form for vehicle warranty because the car has to be physically inspected. Here is how to claim MG warranty cover, step by step.

Claiming through an authorised MG dealer

  • Step 1 — Notify within 7 days. MG's terms require you to notify an authorised MG Motor dealer or distributor within 7 calendar days, or as soon as practical, after the defect appears. Put it in email so you have a timestamp.
  • Step 2 — Book in at any authorised dealer. Use the MG dealer locator. You can claim at any authorised MG dealer, not only the one that sold you the car.
  • Step 3 — Describe the fault precisely. Note when it happens (cold start, highway speed, braking, wet weather), how often, and any warning lights or error messages. Vague descriptions produce "no fault found" outcomes.
  • Step 4 — Present your Service & Warranty Booklet. Bring the maintenance and repair log plus tax invoices for every service. For non-dealer servicing, bring proof the record was uploaded to MG's portal.
  • Step 5 — Get the diagnosis in writing. Ask for the job card, the written diagnosis, confirmation the claim has been lodged with MG, and the claim or job number.

If the vehicle can't be driven

  • Call MG Roadside Assist on 1800 64 2277 (1800 MG CARS) before arranging your own tow. Free towing to an authorised dealer is included while the vehicle is under warranty.

If the dealer declines your claim

  • Escalate internally first. Lodge an MG warranty complaint with MG Customer Care on 1800 MG TEAM (1800 64 8326), Mon–Fri 8:00am–5:30pm AEST, or email customercare@mgmotor.com.au. You'll be issued a case number — the steps are set out in the MG complaints handling process, and every channel is listed on our MG Motor Australia contact guide.
  • Then escalate externally. Motor vehicles sit outside the telco and energy ombudsman schemes, so MG disputes run through your state fair trading or consumer affairs body, then a civil tribunal (NCAT, VCAT, QCAT, SACAT or ACAT). Start at the ACCC's guide to consumer help. Owners have reported claims paid in full only after proceedings were commenced.

Who pays for what

  • You bear the cost of submitting the claim — getting the car there, and your time.
  • If the claim is valid, MG covers parts, labour, freight and administrative costs.
  • If exploratory work shows the fault is not a manufacturing defect, you pay for that investigation. Always get a written diagnostic cost estimate before authorising teardown work.

Exclusions & limitations - when
MG Motor Australia
's warranty doesn't apply

MG's warranty covers manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship. It does not cover everything that can go wrong with a car. These are the MG warranty exclusions that catch owners out most often.

Wear, maintenance and consumables

  • Brake pads and discs, wiper blades, globes, filters and clutch friction material wearing out through normal use.
  • Tyres, which are covered by the tyre manufacturer's own warranty rather than MG.
  • Routine maintenance items: oil, coolant, brake fluid, spark plugs, wheel alignment and wheel balancing.

Damage, misuse and environment

  • Accident and collision damage — an insurance matter, not a warranty one.
  • Misuse, negligence or abuse, including running out of oil or coolant, ignoring warning lights, or continuing to drive a faulty vehicle.
  • Racing, rallying, track days or competitive use of any kind.
  • Environmental and external damage: hail, flood, salt corrosion, acid rain, stone chips, tree sap, bird droppings, industrial fallout, vandalism and animal or rodent damage.

Parts, repairs and modifications

  • Non-genuine parts and accessories, and unapproved modifications such as lift kits, engine tunes, aftermarket ECUs, and non-approved towbars or electrical accessories.
  • Unauthorised or improper repairs performed outside MG's approved methods.
  • Odometer tampering, or any vehicle where the true mileage cannot be established.

Use and servicing conditions

  • Commercial use of a passenger vehicle — rideshare, taxi, courier or hire — drops cover to 7 years / 160,000 km and removes the extended tier.
  • MG warranty service history requirements are strict: a missed service, or one completed outside the 30-day / 2,000 km window, voids the extended tier. An undocumented non-dealer service can jeopardise the standard warranty too.
  • Taxis, rental and hire vehicles are also excluded from MG Roadside Assist.

MG warranty denied? Australian Consumer Law still applies. Consumer guarantees operate regardless of whether the factory warranty has expired, been voided or been refused, and a major failure can entitle you to a refund or replacement rather than another repair. Check the ACCC guidance on consumer guarantees — "your warranty is void" is not the end of the conversation.

Required documentation for
MG Motor Australia
warranty claims

Claims fail on paperwork far more often than on engineering. Assemble this before you book the car in.

Essential

  • Service & Warranty Booklet with the maintenance and repair log completed and stamped — MG's terms explicitly require you to present it.
  • Tax invoices for every scheduled service, showing date, odometer reading, work performed, parts replaced and fluids used.
  • Proof of purchase or registration date — the dealer sales contract or registration papers establish when cover started.
  • Vehicle identification — your VIN and registration number.
  • Photo ID and evidence of ownership if you bought the vehicle second-hand.

Strongly recommended

  • Non-dealer workshop job cards plus confirmation the records were uploaded to MG's service history portal within 10 days.
  • Photographs and video of the fault — dash warning lights, fluid leaks, paint defects, panel gaps, screen errors. Date-stamped footage of an intermittent fault is the most effective way to defeat a "no fault found" outcome.
  • A written fault log recording dates, times, conditions and kilometres at each occurrence.
  • An independent mechanic's written report — owners have reported dealers reversing a "no fault found" once an independent diagnosis was tabled.
  • Copies of prior job cards and correspondence for repeat visits about the same fault. Repeat-repair history is what converts a minor fault into a major failure under the ACL.

For an escalation to MG Customer Care

  • Include your full name, address and contact details, vehicle registration and VIN, a clear description of the complaint, the outcome you want, and your supporting documents.

customer warranty experiences

Escalation Turned a Part-Payment Demand Into a Full Repair

An owner in NSW reported persistent transmission noise at low kilometres, and multiple component replacements failed to fix it. The dealer demanded the owner pay 50% of a repair the workshop itself had caused. After ACCC and Fair Trading involvement, MG ultimately covered the repair in full.

Tip: never accept a part-payment demand for a fault the workshop created — refuse it in writing.

Wheel Bearing Approved, Brakes Charged as a Wear Item

A Queensland MG ZS owner had a grinding wheel bearing diagnosed and replaced under warranty without dispute. The brake work was charged to the owner at roughly $1,447 as a wear item. The owner reported the residual noise was never fully resolved.

Tip: ask the service advisor to split the quote into "warranty" and "customer pays" lines before work starts.

Approved Claims That Stalled on Parts Supply

Several 2026 reviews describe claims approved but stuck waiting on parts. A Queensland MG HS owner was quoted an 8-plus week wait for a brake vacuum hose unavailable in Australia. An NSW MG ZST owner reported a USB port repair still incomplete across three visits since April 2024.

Tip: an approved claim is not a completed claim — get the part number and ETA in writing at lodgement.

Warranty FAQs

Is MG's 10-year/250,000 km warranty automatic, or do I have to earn it?

MG Motor Australia's 10-year / 250,000 km warranty is conditional, not automatic — you only keep it by servicing exclusively at an authorised MG dealer. Every privately used passenger MG holds 7 years / unlimited km regardless of who services it. Each service must fall within 30 days and 2,000 km of the scheduled interval. Miss one and the car drops permanently to the 7-year tier.

Can I service my MG at an independent mechanic without losing my warranty?

Servicing your MG at any suitably qualified Australian repairer keeps the standard 7-year warranty, but it ends the extended 10-year tier permanently. You still have to meet the 30-day / 2,000 km service window, and each record must be uploaded to MG's customer service history portal within 10 days. Keep every job card and tax invoice — an undocumented independent service can put the standard warranty at risk too.

My MG warranty claim was approved, so why is the repair taking so long?

Parts supply is the usual bottleneck on approved MG Motor Australia warranty claims, with owners commonly reporting 4 to 8 week waits for components shipped from overseas. Report any fault to an authorised MG dealer within 7 days of noticing it, then get the claim number, part number and ETA in writing at lodgement. Ask about a loan car and follow up by email every seven days.

MG says my warranty is void or refused my claim — do I have any rights left?

A denied or voided MG warranty does not end your rights, because Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless of what the factory warranty says. Escalate to MG Customer Care on 1800 MG TEAM for a case number, then to your state fair trading body or a tribunal such as NCAT, VCAT or QCAT. If the same fault keeps returning, claim a major failure in writing and ask for a refund or replacement.

If you don’t act now, you might lose your rights.

We’ll help you file a complaint and use your warranty the way it was meant to work.
